1D how-to guide
Cutting bars and profiles in Velmar Cut, step by step
Eight steps take a 1D job from a new file to a cutting plan at the saw and stock booked in the warehouse.

-
Start a new job
Press Ctrl+N or New ▾ and choose Bars & profiles (1D). Click the job name in the header to rename it, type and press Enter. The job saves itself every 15 seconds and on exit, and Saved ✓ beside the name shows that it has.
-
Enter the parts
On Parts & demand, add a row for each part with Add part, or paste rows from Excel with Ctrl+V. Import table ▾ reads CSV, Excel and other tables, with the columns in any order. Angles are the internal angles at the bottom left and bottom right of the piece.
- Length: the full length of the piece from end to end, including angled ends.
- Qty, Material / profile and Label: how many, from which profile, and the code printed on the plan.
- Left ° and Right °: 90° is square, 45°/45° makes a trapezoid and 45°/135° a parallelogram.
- Ends and Shape: Ends says Same or Opposite in words, and Shape draws the piece.
-
Add bars and remnants
On Stock & remnants, enter the bar lengths you have, with quantity, price and priority; the material must match the parts. Remnants have the highest priority, so the plan uses them before a new bar. Warehouse ▾ takes bars and remnants from the warehouse into the job as linked rows, and Add stock ▾ Compare bar lengths lists the bar lengths that waste least.
-
Check the cutting settings
Open Cutting settings before you optimize. The Simple tab holds the optimization level and the main options, the Advanced tab holds the rest, and Restore defaults goes back to Balanced. Each job keeps its own settings.
- Kerf: the thickness of the saw blade.
- End trims: what is cut off each end of a bar; a trim that is not 0 includes the kerf.
- Minimum reusable remnant length: shorter leftovers count as scrap.
- Optimization level: Fast gives a good plan within a minute, Balanced (the default) takes up to 5 minutes, Best up to 10 and Maximum up to 30; the last three plan remnants first.
-
Optimize
Press Optimize (F5). The plan appears on Cutting layouts when it is ready. Change a part, a bar or a setting and optimize again; Ctrl+Z undoes changes to the job.
-
Read the plan
Cutting layouts draws each bar to scale, and bars cut the same way are grouped with a repeat count. Cut positions are blade centre lines measured from the start of the bar.
- Each bar shows its parts with their codes and end angles, the cuts, the kerf and the remainder.
- The legend marks Parts, Reusable remnant, Scrap and End trims.
- Cut sequence lists every cut in order with its position, angle and operation; select a cut to highlight it.
- Unplaced lists the pieces the stock could not hold.
-
Print or export the plan
Print / preview ▾ prints the plan, the tables and part stickers. Export plan ▾ writes a PDF or HTML report with the cutting schedule and part drawings to scale, DXF, DWG or SVG drawings, and an Excel or CSV cut list. The exports are geometry and lists, not machine code, so check the first bar against your saw before production.
-
Book the stock in the warehouse
When the plan is cut, press Apply to warehouse. It takes the bars the plan uses from the job's stock, and from the warehouse for linked rows, and stores the remnants you check. It runs once per plan, and Job history keeps a snapshot before and after, so you can go back.
Further help
The Guide & conventions page in Velmar Cut explains angles, cut coordinates and file formats in detail. The questions and answers page covers common questions, and the 2D guide takes a sheet job through the same steps.
