Shape editor guide
Drawing and editing parts in Velmar Cut
Ten steps cover the shape editor: drawing a new part or sheet, adding holes, setting exact sizes and changing parts that are already in a job. For some small workshops, this might be all the drawing they need.

Open the editor
On Parts & demand, choose Draw new part… to open the window Draw a new part. The tools run along the top, History is on the left, the properties of the selected element are on the right, and a status line checks the shape as you draw. The wheel zooms, the middle button pans and a double-click on an empty spot fits the view.
-
Draw the outline
Every part starts with its outline. Pick a template from Templates ▾ and type its sizes, or draw the outline with a tool.
- Templates ▾: rectangle, disc, ring, flange, L-bracket or plate with a hole grid.
- Profile (L): click points for lines, hold A for a tangent arc, or draw three-point arcs; Shift locks 0/45/90° and Tab types the length and angle.
- Click the first point to close the profile; Backspace removes the last segment.
- Rectangle (B), Circle (C) and Polygon (P): drag to size, or click once for the default size; Tab types the sizes, and the number of polygon sides is set on the right.
-
Add holes, slots and corners
Circle, Rectangle, Slot (O) and Polygon drawn inside the outline make holes; a closed profile inside makes a hole, and one across the edge a cut-out. Fillet and Chamfer round or cut a corner of the outline or of a hole: click a corner, an edge for both its corners, or press Ctrl+A for all, and set the radius or distance on the right. Combine ▾ works on the selected holes and shapes.
- Union (Ctrl+U), subtract or intersect the selected holes.
- Add to the outline for a tab or ear, Cut from the outline for a notch.
- Mirror horizontally or vertically, and Copy.
- Pattern… repeats the selected holes in a pattern.
-
Measure and set sizes
Ruler (R, or hold Ctrl) measures clear and centre distances between two elements; click a value to type a new one, and the element moves to match. Dimensions (D) shows every dimension of the shape, and a click on one lets you type a new value. Drag a handle of the selected element to resize it.
-
Move and rotate holes
With Select / move (V), click an element, Shift+click to add more, or drag a box to select several. Drag holes to move them; they snap to round distances from the sides. For an exact place, set Position by and the X and Y distances from a side in the properties, and turn the element with Rotation (°).
-
Work with History and properties
History lists every step of the shape. Click a step to select it, double-click it to change its size, and right-click it to suppress or delete it; the undo and redo arrows step back and forward. The right side shows the properties of the selected element: its sizes, Rotation (°), Position by and Pattern….
-
Check the shape
The status line checks the shape as you draw and says what is missing, for example "Draw the outline first." when there is no outline yet. When everything is right it reads "The shape is valid. OK applies the changes." Ctrl+Z steps back in the editor, and Cancel asks before it discards your changes.
-
Save the part into the job
OK adds the part with its shape as a new row on Parts & demand, and the status bar confirms it with "New row drawn"; Ctrl+Z removes it again. Export ▾ saves the shape alone as a DXF, DWG or SVG drawing.
-
Draw a sheet or remnant
On Stock & remnants, Draw new sheet… opens the same editor for a sheet: draw its outline and its holes, the areas without material. A sheet with holes or a cut outline is used only by true-shape contour nesting, and when a sheet gets one, Velmar Cut offers to switch the cutting method.
-
Edit a part already in the job
Every part, drawn or imported from DXF or DWG, opens in the same editor: choose Edit shape… on its row or double-click its drawing. Select an element to change its size, add a hole or delete one, then press OK; the status bar confirms "Shape changed" and Ctrl+Z undoes it. Save as new part keeps the original part and adds the edited shape as a new row after it. The row then shows the new shape, and the next Optimize uses it.
